Remembering and Honoring Robert L. McDonald
Reno, NV (November 15, 2008) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert L. McDonald, one of the founding partners of McDonald Carano and a well-known leader in the Nevada community. Bob was a beloved member of the Firm and an exceptional attorney.
Bob joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was a member of the 54th Fighter Squadron sent to the Aleutian Islands in June of 1942, two days after Dutch Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. As a Major, he eventually became a Squadron Commander in the 46th Squadron, where he flew off Iwo Jima flying P-51s.
After World War II ended, Bob attended the University of Nevada, then the University of San Francisco Law School. He began his legal career as a Nevada Deputy Attorney General, working with Nevada Attorney General Alan Bible, and he later became a United States Deputy Attorney General. He and Alan Bible became private law practice partners forming Bible & McDonald.
Bob founded several gaming companies in Northern Nevada and was a principal in the development of Incline Village. He was also a board member of Valley Bank of Nevada, an original partner of Boomtown, and at the time of his death, part owner of Bonanza Casino.
Bob was committed to giving back to his community. He was instrumental in starting the Junior Ski Program, established Pop Warner Football, and was a trustee of the Reno National Championship Air Races and the Northern Nevada chapter of the National Association of Christians and Jews. He served as Chairman of the Nevada Fish and Game Commission. Bob’s most fulfilling project in later life was founding Fun Camp, a program that funds trips for underprivileged youths to summer camp at Mountain Meadow Ranch in Northern, California.
Visitation will be Monday, November 24, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walton Funeral Home, 875 W. Second Street, with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a. m. on Tuesday. November 25, 2008 at Our Lady of the Snows, 1138 Wright Street. The celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Eldorado Casino after the services.
