McDonald Carano Sponsors Performance by Duo Violão Plus One, Hosted by Toiyabe Chamber Music Society
McDonald Carano supports the Toiyabe Chamber Music Society and proudly sponsors a special performance by Duo Violão Plus One. The event begins at 7:00 pm on April 8 at Craft Wine and Beer (22 Martin St., Reno, Nevada) and admission is complimentary.
The instrumental program emphasizes Choro, which is considered the first Brazilian genre of contemporary urban popular music. The group’s 2019 album, “A História de Choro,” is recognized as one of the best musical albums in the Bay Area. During their stay in Reno, Duo will also conduct a master class workshop for guitar and ukulele students attending North Valleys High School.
McDonald Carano’s sponsorship of the Toiyabe Chamber Music Society is led by Senior Counsel Sylvia Harrison who has served as President of TCMS since 2019. Sylvia is a violinist, violist, and cellist, and plays viola and violin in numerous community and semi-professional orchestras. She is also a four-term member of the Board of Trustees for the Reno Philharmonic Association where she has chaired the Educational and Artistic committees and served on the Governance and Executive committees. During her work with the Education Committee, Sylvia was largely instrumental in the development of the youth orchestras, helping recruit a dedicated conductor for the advanced ensemble, which regularly performs in prestigious venues throughout the U.S.
Founded in 1974, TCMS is a non-profit organization presenting chamber music performances featuring local musicians, accomplished professionals from throughout the U.S., and new and commissioned works by area composers. TCMS also provides chamber music workshops and hands-on educational opportunities for aspiring musicians of all ages.
Historically, TCMS offered summer concerts in Incline Village where the audience was comprised primarily of local residents and tourists visiting for the summer season. During the Covid-imposed hiatus in 2020, the TCMS Board reflected on a new model for the organization to reach a wider audience and better fulfill its goals. Beginning with the 2021 season, TCMS’ venues expanded into Reno and Carson City, and in 2022 TCMS lengthened its season and presented performances in venues in Reno and Fallon. For the 2023 season TCMS expanded presentations in the metro and outlying rural communities. TCMS changed its name to the “Toiyabe Chamber Music Society” as it is no longer focused solely on the Tahoe area. The name evokes the geographic area of northwestern Nevada and rural communities that TCMS serves.
