2023 Hiring Outlook: Midsize Firms Positioned for Recruitment Success

In February 2023, Of Counsel, the legal profession publication known as The Legal Practice and Management Report, published its annual special issue in which law firm leaders across the U.S. share their views on the recruiting and hiring outlook for the New Year. Matt Addison, Managing Partner of our Reno office, was interviewed for the feature article and his quoted comments are excerpted below. The complete Of Counsel Feb. 2023 issue is available here.

What Makes McDonald Carano Different?

“Our focus,” says Matthew Addison, the Managing Partner of Nevada-based McDonald Carano’s Reno office, “has been to stress the opportunities our firm provides to perform substantive legal work early in one’s career, build a stable and satisfying practice and long-term career, and enjoy a collegial and supportive firm culture. [That’s all] in direct contrast to the initially high salaries but ultra-competitive and fluctuating climates and limited partnership options offered by big, national firms.”

What Areas of Practice are Targeted for Hiring?

In Nevada, Addison outlines the areas in which McDonald Carano is seeking new hires. “Our primary recruitment goal in 2023,” he says, “is to conservatively continue to grow in those areas where the current financial crisis is likely to create more demand—bankruptcy and litigation.”  He adds that the firm also has other needs in practices that will be quite active. “We also perceive a general need in the estate planning and real property transactional areas and attract expertise in Nevada-specific areas like water and mining law. Finally, we have a very successful governmental affairs group, which requires a constant influx of folks with a unique combination of professional competence, experience, and personal charisma.”

In December 2022, Matt was also quoted in the Of Counsel feature article titled “New Year’s Resolutions for the Legal Profession … Accountability, Mental Health, Recession, and Personnel Concerns.”
