Position Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Tax, Trust, and Estate Attorney with a minimum 4 years of post-J.D. experience to join our elite Trust & Estates practice group in Reno. This role offers the opportunity to advise on complex, multi-jurisdictional matters involving estate planning, wealth transfer strategies, family trust company formation and operation, charitable giving, and tax-efficient structuring for clients with substantial assets. You will collaborate with partners on high-profile representations, mentor junior associates, draft progressive trust legislation, and contribute to shaping thought leadership within the industry. This is a full-time, partnership-track position with significant autonomy and growth potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement comprehensive estate plans, including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, dynasty trusts, and specialized vehicles like SLATs, ILITs, and GRATs.
  • Collaborate in the formation, licensure and operation of retail and family trust companies.
  • Provide expert tax advice on federal and state income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes, with a focus on minimizing tax exposure for high-net-worth clients.
  • Represent clients in IRS audits, estate tax controversies, and probate proceedings, leveraging Nevada’s probate-friendly environment.
  • Advise on asset protection, business succession planning, and international estate issues for cross-border families.
  • Assist in trust and estate administration and litigation matters.
  • Draft and negotiate sophisticated agreements, such as family governance documents and charitable trusts.
  • Monitor and interpret evolving tax laws and regulations to proactively counsel clients on opportunities and risks.
  • Participate in business development, including client seminars, publications, and networking with financial advisors and family offices.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active membership in the Nevada State Bar (or immediate eligibility).
  • LL.M. in Taxation, Estate Planning, or an equivalent designation from an accredited program preferred; willingness to obtain if not already held.
  • Internal Revenue Service experience highly valued.
  • Minimum 4 years of post-J.D. experience in tax, trust, and estate law at a reputable U.S. firm, the Internal Revenue Service, or in-house role.
  • Demonstrated success representing high net worth individuals (preferably $50M+ in assets) in sophisticated planning matters.
  • Exceptional analytical skills, with deep knowledge of federal income, transfer, and partnership tax law and related regulations.
  • Strong communication, writing, drafting, advocacy and interpersonal skills and abilities, with a client-service mindset.
  • Familiarity with Nevada-specific planning (e.g., community property) or Western U.S. jurisdictions preferred.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation with performance bonuses and origination credits.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k) profit-sharing, parental leave, generous PTO, and more.
  • Hybrid work flexibility with office space in downtown Reno, steps from the Truckee River and proximity to world-class outdoor recreation.
  • Professional development opportunities, including CLE sponsorship, mentorship from Band 1-ranked partners, and support for thought leadership (e.g., speaking at STEP or ACTEC conferences).
  • A collaborative, inclusive culture that values work-life balance and innovation in serving extraordinary clients.
  • Opportunities to participate in philanthropic and community initiatives.
